Making Pet Travel Simple and Stress-Free

Planning a trip with your pet can be exciting but also a bit overwhelming, especially when it comes to meeting travel regulations. At Bucksport Veterinary Hospital, we help make the process easier by providing health certificates for both domestic and international travel. Our veterinarians ensure your pet has all the necessary health documentation to meet the travel requirements for your destination, so you can focus on enjoying the trip.

What is a Pet Travel Certificate?

A pet travel certificate is an official document issued by a licensed veterinarian that confirms your pet’s health and meets the entry requirements of your travel destination. This certificate is important for international and domestic travel, whether by plane or car, ensuring your pet is fit for travel and free from diseases.
Before we issue a health certificate, we’ll make sure your pet is:
  • Healthy enough for the journey
  • Free from parasites
  • Over 8 weeks old
  • Properly immunized
  • Free of any contagious diseases

When to Start Preparing for Pet Travel

Pet travel requires some planning, especially for international trips. To ensure everything is in order, we recommend starting the process well in advance. Here's a general guide to help you prepare for both domestic and international travel:

Domestic Travel

(Within the U.S.)
  • Start 1-2 months before departure to check any state-specific travel requirements.
  • Schedule a travel consultation with us at least 4-6 weeks before your trip for a thorough health check and to ensure vaccinations are up-to-date.
  • Research any airline or hotel policies regarding pets and ensure your pet is comfortable in their travel carrier.

International Travel

  • Start 3-6 months before travel to allow for necessary tests and vaccinations, such as rabies titer testing (required by certain countries).
  • Some countries, like Hawaii, England, Australia, and New Zealand, have stricter rules, including blood tests, microchipping, or quarantine periods, which may extend the preparation time.
  • Visit us early to book your appointment and get the necessary treatments, vaccinations, and tests well in advance.
